As Decontamination Units and SSDs restart services in the post-COVID era, Trevor Garcia (Decontamination Consultant) looks at some of the issues, impacting on the selection of detergents and disinfectants for use in washer-disinfectors (WDs).

On completion of this course trainees will:
Gain awareness of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SSD and sterilisation services.
Gain an understanding of the relevant guidelines and advice for automated disinfection.
Understand the appropriate considerations when selecting detergents and disinfectants for the instrument and medical device reprocessing.
Be able to appreciate the importance of balancing quick and effective disinfection with good instrument, device and machine care.
